Break the Cycle that Kills Our Success

Three common sayings that kill success

  1. Don’t talk to strangers
  2. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do
  3. You can’t have your cake and eat it too

We were all taught Wrong

As early as childhood, we were taught to not or were prohibited to do certain things in life. These phrases were often used by our parents, guardians, family members, teachers, coaches, school counselors, and people who cared enough, with the intent to keep us safe from dangerous situations. Things that we would naturally be curious about, but would often regret doing, if we did do them. That’s why these phrases are still commonly used today.

Fear is a powerful force in our minds. What we tend to fear puts us in a position to decide not to do it. It often freezes us in place and discriminates against no one. And with these fears, we often miss the chances we would’ve had, if we had taken the time to think about them further. Let’s be honest, no one wants to be wrong about anything, so why risk it? That’s the common approach of most people in society.

Don’t talk to Strangers

Have you ever heard of the saying, “Don’t talk to strangers?” More than likely, everyone’s heard of this in one form or another. Now, I’m not saying that the intentions of this saying are misguided, but the words themselves are particularly disastrous for anyone who seeks success.

Success needs people. In order to be very successful, you have to be able to talk to people. The people you meet on a daily basis can be the same people who become your friends. There are people who will buy your products or services, people who read your blogs or stories, people over the internet who play videos games with you, people who coach and train you through a variety of processes, and people who promote your musical or visual talents in a portfolio.

To go blindly by the guidance of the above saying will bring you nothing. You won’t get anywhere without the people you need to get you to your success, whatever that may look like to you.

Here is another common place saying with good intentions but misguided views.

Don’t Do anything I wouldn’t Do

You’ve heard of this one right? If we listen to this saying, the intentions are sound in that: if it’s not safe, then don’t do it. There’s nothing wrong with advocating for safety, but the misuse of this saying leads us to think we shouldn’t do anything besides what the majority are doing. We are safe if we are like everyone else.

When it comes to success, you don’t want to be the same as others. You want to be able to express yourself and your ideas. You want to be able to freely communicate how you see things, so that others can feel what you feel. In being able to express your thoughts and feelings to those around you, they’re able to relate to it and understand what it means when you convey a message to move.

If we simply follow the misuse of the saying, we cannot separate ourselves from the majority, and we cannot be heard. We would not have a voice to advocate and we will not be able to seek the support we need in order to become successful.

The last and following saying is probably one of the most commonly misunderstood.

You can’t have Your Cake and Eat it too

This is one of the oldest sayings in the book. What does this even mean? Do you know? Does it make any sense to you? If you have cake, you should be able to eat it. I mean, especially if you’re a baker, you would have to make sure the cake tastes good enough to be able to sell it. So why do people use this?

Let me explain why this is used. The premise of it really just comes down to not being able to do two separate things at the same time. We know we’re human, at least 99.997% believe so, but to be two places at the same time is beyond human capability. We don’t have superhuman capabilities, such as sight, smell, or hearing; things that would signal us to take action where we can act in a timely manner.

This doesn’t apply to multitasking. In this day and age, we have tools available to us that can help us do more than one thing at the same time, within the same time period. Things we don’t physically have to do where it can be completed, while we take care of other tasks we want to accomplish. Even more so, if you’re running a business, you can delegate work to an employee, a machine, or another company so you have time for things you consider more important to your personal or professional goals.

We need to be Mindful

To be able to maximize our life we can’t think too narrow. We have to be able to open our minds to things we never thought would be possible. When we creatively explore the possibilities of life, we can create new things and more efficient things to help us do what we ultimately want to do in life. What is it that everyone wants? They want more time to do whatever it is that makes them happy.

So I challenge you. Today is a day to think outside of yourself. Think of the things you want to do in life and start to think about what is needed to get there. Yes, it sounds difficult doesn’t it? But if you break it down into smaller parts of a larger scale plan, you’ll be one step closer than you were yesterday.

This isn’t rocket science. Although, it took massive amounts of research and thought to develop machines to get us into space; nothing we know today would be what it is, if everyone was as closed-minded as those three sayings which are commonplace today.
